Why do you buy Original Art?

Why pay money for an original piece of art work, when you can buy an inexpensive print?
When it comes right down to it, creating a piece of art is a mystery. No artist, no matter how articulate, can explain why a particular work of art was created. By buying an art work you buy a piece of that mystery and have something that no one else will ever have.

If you compare a room with bare walls to one with original art work, the room with the original art work will be vibrant and alive. People will want to visit that room, very much the same way they want to visit museums, because the art work touches their soul in a very personal way. It reminds them of their humanity, of their significance in the world, something that is lost is the business of everyday lives.

Original art is inspiring and moving; it helps people get up in the morning, get through that meeting that they just didn’t want to go to. It can give people the courage to go on, because it expresses something wonderful and profound about themselves, which they may not be able to articulate. That’s why people say, “I don’t know why I bought this piece of art, all I know is that I love it!”

I live with original art all around me...from the unique and colorful spoonrest I bought at a gallery during a visit to Denver, to my original switchplates that make even turning on a light seem fun! Of course every room has walls covered in original artwork - mine and others.

I think the biggest thing I notice is when I walk into a room and there is no original art on the walls...there's not as much energy in that room!

The biggest thrill for me as an artist is to watch someone approach my work, and you can see that they have been "sucked in" - that they have connected to it. And then when they decide to purchase it, and live with it? There is no greater compliment!

I began buying original art by collecting bronze sculptures of wild animals. Being able to have "real" art in my home made me feel actually more connected to my home. More grounded. More like my home was an actual representation of ME. And that made me feel somehow safer and more secure in my own world.

I branched out a bit, to pottery - especially functional art for my kitchen. Again, artists allowed me to "find myself" and make a statement of who I am by the artifacts in my home.

Then...many years later...I picked up a paint brush - and I began to understand. There is a mysterious, mystical TRANSMISSION of who the artist is that begins in their art and pierces all things physical and rational. It then invisibly radiates out to the person who it reaches enough for them to purchase it...and transforms them.

And for that reason, I make art, and I buy original art, and I become more of who I actually am.

This is a great blog and I hope everyone reads it and those who are intimidated by original art can realize that original art does not have to cost a fortune. I have many paintings on my walls, both my own and paintings by others who I admire. I have traded art with other artists, too

I also have a collection of wood masks from Guatemala and a collection of pottery, some from Mexico and some from potters here in North Carolina.

I love to see all these creative things on my walls and on my shelves.

To me living in and around rooms full of original art is like having the constant company of 'friends'.

To be honest for me a 'reproduction print' some how just doesn't do it for me. Looking around I find my eyes skip over them and come to gentle rest on the originals. It is they which bear the actual touch of the artist; the brushstrokes ... lively, flourishing or sometimes slow ponderous and thoughtful.

In a nutshell, I merely look at a reproduction, whereas I learn from an original.

to me having an original artwork makes me feel related to the artist ... the artwork seems to be more 'lively' with the actual strokes artist put on the media ... we could imagine how the artist thinks, feels and how he/she put his/hers thoughts onto the media ..

Growing up in a house full of original art, I cannot imagine bare walls..My home is also full of contemporary, folk, outsider and ethnic art from around the world. It has always amused me when someone who has no knowledge of art asks "Did you make all of this art?" We have traded art with many of our artist friends and it is wonderful to have a very personal connection to each work.

My house is full of art...mine and from friends that I have traded with. I have them all framed and hung on a wall in our guest room. It looks like a gallery and is so cool!

Having a little piece of art from people I interact with from all over the world is quite a thrill. When ever I need to get inspired, I just go to that room.

I also have a lot of ATC's and other altered art items from members of a group I belong to. Making something from the heart and soul for someone is exilirating.

I love all my original art. I honor the process, the artist who created it, the feeling and the expression that it all offers me.

The art that fills my home is alive with the heart and intention from which it made manifest. It is an entity.

It loves.

I surround myself with art. I see paintings when I wake up; art quilts when I go down the hall; photography, paintings, and fiber art throughout my house, and sculpture in my living room and outdoor spaces.

I never hire a designer who doesn't present art as part of their proposal. My living space is so much more intricate and personal than just furniture and accessories.

Hooray for Gallery United! Such talent and insightfulness is always welcome in my home!
